Description

This large Bucephalandra is produced by an Indonesian nursery under the trading name “Melawi Fine Edge”. It is delivered in bundles or tied on plates (pads). Its exact origin and species belonging is unknown to us, but as well as all Bucephalandras, it originates from Borneo island, growing as a rheophyte (adapted to strong current) on rock in the flood zone of rainforest streams. Bucephalandra sp. “Melawi Fine Edge” varies a little in leaf shape and size, the leaves are broadly elliptic with wavy edge and dark-green upper side. Including the stalk, the leaves are about 8-12 cm long.

Bucephalandra species and forms are primarily epiphytes on rock or wood where they attach themselves by their roots. They can also be fixed to the bottom, however the rhizome must not be buried to avoid rotting. The plant will root on its own and benefit from the nutrients in the substrate. The growth is generally slow to very slow.
Bucephalandras cope with poor light conditions, however they develop their most beautiful look with medium lighting, good water current and constant nutrient and CO2 supply. They also tolerate strong lighting, sufficient CO2 and nutrient supply provided. The favourable temperature range is about 20 to 27°C.
We recommend to put Bucephalandras into already cycled aquariums. It is best to leave the plants in peace so they can grow. Sudden changes of parameters may lead to shedding of leaves, normally, however, the plants regrow slowly and produce new shoots on the rhizome. Bucephalandras are easily propagated by cutting terminal and side shoots that also promotes the ramification of the plant.

Planting Instructions

Planting Instructions

  1. Remove the label
  2. Remove the rock wool together with the plant from the net pot
  3. Remove the rock wool from the root system , take care not to break or tear the larger roots while doing this
  4. Plant the stems using tweezers into the substrate

Transitioning process – emersed to submersed growth in your aquarium

  • Provide good water conditions for your plants
  • Dose a respectable aquatic fertilizer for your plants , follow the instructions from the manufacturer
  • Provide the correct lighting spectrum , based on the plants needs
  • Prune dead leaves and stems constantly
  • A Co2 system is a good addition into your aquarium for the plants to flourish
  • Conduct 20-30% water changed once a week to ensure good water conditions
  • Patience is key for the transition to take place

In a few days, after placing your plants in the aquarium you will notice some of the leaves start to melt and fall away.

This means the transition process has started. Please note the plants might look DEAD, but they are fully alive, so do not panic. After a few days you will notice new growth will appear and the plant will fully change its form into submersed growth. Continuous trimming and fertilization is needed for the plants to thrive in your aquarium. All plants have specific needs but if you follow the general instructions on our labels the plant will transition well and will eventually succeed and prosper in your aquarium.

With its amazing coloration, L. aromatica is most effective in the aquascape as a focal point. It shows up particularly well against a dark background or against species with small, bright, light green leaves. This species is extremely effective and appealing, especially if it is well maintained.
