Rotala rotundifolia

Rotala rotundifolia from South-East Asia has long, thin leaves and 15-30 long stems, 2-3 cm wide including the leaves. Unlike other Rotala species it is relatively undemanding, although it needs good light to produce red leaves. It forms side shoots willingly, becoming compact and bushy. This also means that it is hard for light to reach the lower leaves, so the plant should be pruned frequently

Description

Rotala rotundifolia is a time-tested popular stem plant wonderfully suitable for aquascaping. Its emerged form has roundish leaves, in the aquarium they grow to a longer, narrow form. Compared with other Rotala species it is relatively undemanding. This highly variable species is widely distributed in the Asian subtropics and tropics; standard variants available in trade are light green to reddish under water, depending on the light intensity.

Planting Instructions

  1. Remove the label
  2. Remove the rock wool together with the plant from the net pot
  3. Remove the rock wool from the root system , take care not to break or tear the larger roots while doing this
  4. Plant the stems using tweezers into the substrate

Transitioning process – emersed to submersed growth in your aquarium

  • Provide good water conditions for your plants
  • Dose a respectable aquatic fertilizer for your plants , follow the instructions from the manufacturer
  • Provide the correct lighting spectrum , based on the plants needs
  • Prune dead leaves and stems constantly
  • A Co2 system is a good addition into your aquarium for the plants to flourish
  • Conduct 20-30% water changed once a week to ensure good water conditions
  • Patience is key for the transition to take place

In a few days, after placing your plants in the aquarium you will notice some of the leaves start to melt and fall away.

This means the transition process has started. Please note the plants might look DEAD, but they are fully alive, so do not panic. After a few days you will notice new growth will appear and the plant will fully change its form into submersed growth. Continuous trimming and fertilization is needed for the plants to thrive in your aquarium. All plants have specific needs but if you follow the general instructions on our labels the plant will transition well and will eventually succeed and prosper in your aquarium.

This plant is really like an aquatic grass, with thin stalks growing from roots that spread horizontally by sending our runners. Due to its tall height, this plant makes a stunning background plant when grown in large clusters.     Heteranthera zosterifolia is a beautiful stem plant with bright green lanceolate leaves. In its country of origin, Brazil, it usually grows in stangant waters and swampy regions. H. zosterifolia is a relatively undemanding plant and grows well at medium light intensities without additional CO2 fertlisation. It attains its full potential, however, under strong lights and with CO2 fertilisation, then it shows lush, intensive growth and larger leaves. When allowed to grow out of the water it will often get nice blue flowers
